How to Shoot the Best Recruitment Video Possible

Employer Advice | PreviewMe | 9 December 2018

In today’s job market, competition for high-quality candidates is stronger than ever. With unemployment sitting at roughly 4.4 %, it doesn’t appear that this competition will change anytime soon.

As a result, companies need to do everything they can to stand out and attract quality candidates and increase the likelihood they are able to find their ideal candidate. One of the best ways to do this is by adding video into a companies talent acquisition strategy. With a number of New Zealand companies now starting to realise this, if you are not already, or at least planning to make recruitment videos a part of your recruitment strategy, you will miss out.

However, if you are already using video, here are a few tips on how to take your next video to the next level.

Show off
This is your opportunity to showcase all the positive aspects of your company and make viewers say ‘I want to work there!’ So don’t be afraid to show off a little bit.

It’s important you are able to highlight all the unique and wonderful things that make your company stand out. Highlight the physical environment, your people and some of the work that your company does.

However, don’t lie. Viewers will see straight past any false claims and if candidates come in for an interview they will notice the difference straight away. This is your chance to make a good first impression, so don’t waste it.

Who are you going to include?
While your companies environment will speak for itself, your people will sell your company as an attractive employment location. So it’s vital you include a range of people from throughout the company in any recruitment video.

Ensure you have a good mixture of people ranging from people in leadership positions all the way down. It is a good idea to include people that are directly involved in the hiring process, as it is good to introduce the key decision makers to potential candidates.

Answer all their questions

It’s no secret, the hiring process is filled with many questions and often times a number of these questions are fairly basic. This is your chance to answer a number of the basic questions early on in the process.

This will help the candidates get a better picture of the company early on, while, allowing for a much more efficient and impactful interview process. This is because, as you answer the questions in the video, you won’t have to spend time answering them in a short, 30-minute interview. Which means there is more time to ask meaningful questions that will help you determine whether a candidate is a good fit or not.

Don’t drag it out
It’s important to remember you are not making a feature-length film. So try to keep your videos fairly short. Somewhere between two to five minutes which is filled with relevant and engaging content is a good range to shoot for.

Produce more than one
Remember, different people are attracted to or impacted by different pieces of news and information. A message that speaks to one candidate, might, in fact, turn another one off. So be mindful of this, and if your budget allows, film several different videos.

There is a multitude of different video ideas you can record, including, days in the life, project-driven content, generic company-wide focus or even videos that showcase the companies out of work activities or culture.

By having several different videos that speak to different parts of your company, you are ensuring your messaging is felt by a number of potential candidates.

Where will you share it?
The platforms which you choose to release your videos on will have a massive impact on the amount of attention and reach you’re able to generate. So before you release them into the world, ask yourself “what is the platform that the majority of my target audience spend time on?”

The answer to this question will give you a good understanding of what direction you should go. The common social media platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn are a good place to start, as they have the largest userbases. However, it is also a great idea to post them on YouTube and job platforms such as PreviewMe.

Video is by far the best way to communicate with and attract potential employees. It is a great way to showcase all the benefits and characteristics that make your company special and one that people want to work for.

So, if you are not already including video in your talent acquisition strategies, it is time you shift your focus and start investing in video. Once you do, it will only be a matter of time before you are able to attract the candidates you desire.
